Sheet iron padlock (teddy bear head shape); painted black with brass rectangular sliding key plate brass key with baluster-shaped shaft and complex key cut.

According to collector Elie Nadelman, this lock was from the battleship "Alabama." It was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

U-shaped with two 'ears' in sheet iron with baluster-shaped, flat brass pivoting keyhole cover and rectangular brass keyhole surround; iron key with compress heart- shaped handle, banded shaft.

Gallery Label: 
According to the donor, the padlock and the key were from the Fortress Monroe while Jefferson Davis was imprisoned there. The prison was secured by Lt. Col. Nathan Church, father of the donor, of the 26th Michigan regiment who was in command at Fortress Monroe under General Nelson A. Miles.

The knocker came from the London home of Samuel Bayard (1767-1840), who was appointed by George Washington in 1794 to act as an agent for the U.S. in prosecuting U.S. claims before the British Admiralty courts following the ramification of Jay's Treaty. The donor's father (Samuel Bayard Dod) was the grandson of Samuel Bayard.

Gallery Label: 
The large key was for the outside gate; the smaller for the inside gate of the Old New York State Prison at what is now 303 West 10th Street. The New York State Prsion occupied the building from 1791-1828, and then it was later occupied by Behlstein and Worte Empire Brewery. The old building was torn down, and a new one erected which is currently occupied by the donor.
