Gallery Label:
These mirror knobs celebrate Thomas Truxtun (1755-1822), an American naval officer who fought in the Revolution and commanded the U.S. Constellation against the French in 1799. The image actually represents the British naval hero Horatio Nelson, who was celebrated for his victories over the French in 1799 and 1800. A British manufacturer apparently substituted Nelson for Truxtun, assuming that few British or American consumers knew what Truxtun actually looked like. The image is based on Daniel Orme's portrait of Nelson, disseminated as a stipple engraving in 1798.
