Chinese export porcelain platter with polychrome decoration on white ground; rectangular with scalloped edges; underglaze blue border of butterflies, plant motifs, and diapering in the "Fitzhugh" pattern; in the center, an overglaze polychrome winged figure of fame holding the eagle insignia of the Society of the Cincinnati.

Emblazoned with the emblem of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of Revolutionary War officers, this platter is from a set of porcelain commisioned by Samuel Shaw in China in 1784-85. It was purchased by Henry Lee in New York in 1786 acting as an agent for George Washington, or may have been part of the set purchased for Lee's own use. The Washington service descended to George Washington Parke Custis and then Robert E. Lee.

Description:
Square, earthenware tile with opaque green, yellow, and red glazes. The style of this tile reflects the Arts and Crafts and the pre-Raphaelite movements, popular in America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the center of the tile, the raised head of a medieval king is superimposed over a red cross. The king wears a crown with a fleur de lis on top. The king's head faces right, and there is a spear on either side of the head, also superimposed over the cross. Shallow impressed lines in the green background of the tile give the impression of light emanating from the center of the tile. Above the decoration is the impressed word "EXPOSITION", with the words "ST. LOUIS 1904" below. The back of the tile has an impressed rectangular area with the raised words, "THE/ HARTFORD FAIENCE CO./ HARTFORD, CONN." Original square cardboard box with inscription; "ST. LOUIS TILE/ MOST ARTISTIC SOUVENIER/ AT THE FAIR/ MADE BY/ THE HARTFORD FAIENCE CO./ HARTFORD, CONN."
