Description: 
Tin-glazed earthenware charger with the Duke of Marlborough in armor holding a baton flanked by initials "DM" with blue and yellow lines and blue dashes on rim painted and sponged in blue, yellow, and green on white ground; charger has buff-colored earthenware body with foot rim with opaque white tin-glaze on obverse and reverse; three stilt marks on obverse; string tied around foot ring.

Gallery Label: 
John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) was an English General noted for his victories in the War of Spanish Succession (1702-1713), especially at the battle of Blenheim (1704). He served William III, Anne, and George I. According to Michael Archer, the charger was made in London, possibly Norfolk House in Lambeth. According to John Austin, it was made in Bristol.

Tin-glazed earthenware charger with Queen Anne sitting between trees wearing a crown and holding an orb and sceptre and flanked by initials "AR" with blue and yellow lines and blue dashes on rim painted and sponged in blue, yellow, and green on white ground; charger has buff-colored earthenware body with foot rim with opaque white tin-glaze on obverse; clear greenish-yellow lead glaze on reverse; three stilt marks on obverse; string tied around foot ring.

Description: 
Tin-glazed earthenware oval molded dish with wide rim; white tin glaze decorated in blue with an unclothed woman representing fecundity seated among columns, draperies, leaded windows, and five small children. Flower baskets and masks on the rim and floral sprays and birds in wells. Date (1703) and initials(W over W G) painted in window.

Gallery Label: 
The design of this dish is copied from lead-glazed wares made by the sixteenth-century French potter Bernard Palissy. English examples were probably cast from a mold made from the earlier French models. This example dates later than any of the seventeen known dated examples of the fecundity motif, which all fall within the dates 1633 to 1697. A similar example, from the collection of Bertram K. and Nina Fletcher Little, sold at Sotheby's, October 21-22, 1994.
