According to the donor, her grandfather purchased this stand from the Astor House Hotel. John Jacob Astor built the Astor House in 1836 after assembling the lots around his former house until he purchased the full block on the west side of Broadway between Vesey and Barclay Streets. Complete with gaslights and bathing facilities on every floor, Astor House was built in the Greek revival style with a granite façade and a central entrance flanked by Doric columns. By the 1870s however, the Astor House was considered old-fashioned. The stand was probably purchased around 1913 when the hotel closed and the site was redeveloped as the "Astor Office Building."
