Description:
Honey amber machine-made glass figured bottle with flat, sloping collar, short tapered neck, body shaped like an elephant with medallion with head of Richard Nixon in profile on obverse and medallion with head of Spiro Agnew in profile on reverse, inscription "NIXON '68 FOR PRESIDENT" on obverse, "AGNEW '68 FOR VICE PRESIDENT" on reverse, and additional inscriptions on edge and underside of oblong base.

This campaign bottle was acquired by J. William Middendorf II, a Wall Street businessman and enthusiastic Republican. He served as Treasurer of the Republican National Committee in the late 1960s and was involved with the 1968 campaign of Nixon and Agnew. The bottle was given to the curator of his private collection, Wendy Shadwell, who later donated the bottle to the Historical Society while she was serving as N-YHS curator of prints.

Description:
Translucent red non-lead glass smelling bottle (or pungent) composed of two central pieces blown and rolled in gather of glass, cut into 10-sided form; brass caps at either end, decorated with elaborate scrollwork surrounding flat disk at top, engraved with illegible maker's mark or monogram at one end.

Translucent red non-lead glass smelling bottle (or pungent) blown in a mold and gilded, with elaborately decorated metal (probably gilded) cap; bottle cut with pattern of arches and oval indentations and polished, and gilded with pattern of flowers, scrolls, and other decoration; cap with raised scene of fountain with birds drinking out of it and with scrolls at bottom; maker's mark under cap.
