Cobalt blue lead glass footed salt blown in a multi-part pold patterned with four rows of six diamonds each enclosing a four-part checkerboard ("Checkered - diamond pattern"); double-ogee bowl joined to the slightly sloping circular foot with a solid ribbed knop joined from the same gather; pontil mark.

Salts in this so-called "checkered-diamond" pattern are associated with glassmaker John Frederick Amelung (1741-1798) and the New Bremen Glassmanufactory in Maryland. While this salt is very similar to documented examples from Amelung's manufactory, there are certain differences which make an Amelung attribution questionable.
