Description: 
Wrought silver soup tureen; ovoid bowl on a ovoid pedestal with applied cast scroll design and four scroll and trefoil feet; bowl incurved to an applied egg and dart rim and vertical bezel; two cast floral strap handles applied at the ends; ovoid lid raised to a low oval dome in the center surmounted by a cast laurel wreath ring handle; repoussé chased foliate and scroll cartouches around the Perry family crest, an anchor on fess below a hind's head, on one side and the inscription, "Presented to Commodore/ Matthew Calbraith Perry/ by the Chamber of Commerce and/ Merchants of New York" in script on the other side; makers' marks stamped on the base.

On December 28, 1855, the Chamber of Commerce and Merchants of New York presented Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry (1794-1858) with a 381-piece silver dinner service in acknowledgement of his successful negotiation of a treaty with Japan in 1854. In the letter of presentation the committee remarked, "To have brought this secluded Empire, into the intercourse of nations; is an achievement which may justly be ranked, among the greatest events of the age..."

Silver presentation box; ovoid casket with applied concave sides with a die-rolled geometric grapevine design and an applied beaded band, on four cast foliate pad legs; hinged, matte, ovoid lid with an applied beaded band along the rim; band of engraved flowers around the edge and an engraved tapestry with tassels in the center; cast bird finial, on a branch holding sheet music in its beak, screwed through the center of the lid; gilt interior; inscribed on the base, "To remind/ Miss Emma C. Thursby/ of her great triumphs in a series of Grand Concerts/ throughout the principal cities of America/ in/ connection with/ GILMORE'S BAND/ this souvenir is presented/ with the best wishes/ of/ the members of that organization." in script; maker's marks stamped on the base.

This decorative box was given in private and intended as a personal tribute to the recipient. The box, probably intended to hold jewelry, was presented by bandleader Patrick S. Gilmore (1829-1892) to singer Emma Cecilia Thursby (1845-1931) in 1875 after an extended tour in which she performed with his celebrated brass band in fourteen American cities. Several weeks after the close of the tour, in April 1875, Thursby noted in her diary that she received the box from Gilmore following a meeting at the Union Square Theatre.

Gallery Label: 
New York City mayor George B. McClellan used this sterling silver subway controller to start the city's first subway train on its maiden voyage on October 27, 1904. August Belmont, president of the Interborough Rapid Transit Railroad, presented the hefty handle during the festivities at City Hall. McClellan was so intoxicated by the speed of the train that he raced through the scheduled station stop at 42nd Street and continued uptown, only yielding the controls to the company's conductor at 103rd Street.
