According to the donor, these candlesticks were given by George Washington to Julia Bayard (1806-1865) upon her marriage to the president's nephew, Lawrence Washington. This pedigree has proven to be implausible as Julia (Juliet Elizabeth) Bayard married William Augustine Washington, Jr. (ca. 1784-1830), in 1823, twenty-four years after George Washington's death. More likely, the candlesticks descended through the Bayard family. They may have been purchased by Julia's mother, Martha Pintard Bayard (1769-1837), during her residence in London with her husband, Samuel Bayard, between 1794 and 1798.
Provenance:
Probably purchased by Martha Pintard (1769-1837), who married Samuel Bayard (1767-1840); probably to their daughter Caroline Smith Bayard (1804-1891), who married Dr. Albert Baldwin Dod (1805-1845); to their son Samuel Bayard Dod (1839-1907), who married (1st) Isabel Williamson Green (1840-1883); to their daughter Isabel Green Dod (1864-1944), the donor.
