Description:
Cast silver plate cruet stand; oval frame and oval base with four cylindrical legs attached to the frame and base with ball finials and ball feet; four circular rings applied to the inside of the frame to hold cruets or casters; forked stem through the center with an applied strap handle across the top; maker's marks stamped on the underside of the base.

Gallery Label:
Colonel William Floyd (1734-1821), a major landowner, distinguished public servant, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, purchased this cann as a wedding gift for his daughter Mary in 1784. Canns like these were popular products in the shop of Elias Pelletreau, a silversmith who worked in Southampton, Long Island. Although of Huguenot descent and trained by Huguenot craftsman Simeon Soumaine, Pelletreau served a primarily Anglo-Quaker clientele based in and around Southampton.
Provenance:
Mary Floyd (1763-1805), who married Benjamin Tallmadge (1754-1835); descent uncertain; purchased before 1949 by Waldron P. Belknap, Jr.; bequeathed to his mother, Mrs. Waldron Phoenix Belknap, Sr. (1874-1959), the donor.
