Description:
Wrought and cast silver coffeepot with an urn-shaped body with repoussé chased foliate and scroll cartouches around the center, one cartouche engraved, "M. A. Benedict" in script; incurved neck with a cast foliate band applied around the shoulder and a plain band around the rim; hinged, circular, domed lid with an applied "Islamic-style" dome and egg shaped finial;cast, s-curve spout in the form of a grape vine with a notched lip; cast acanthus leaf, scroll handle with ivory insulators applied to the rear of the body; body seated on a stepped pedestal with beaded band saround the joint and the footring; makers' marks stamped on the base.

Silver tea service including a teapot, sugar bowl with lid, creamer, and waste bowl; all have inverted pear-shaped bodies with eleven wide concave flutes seated on a circular stepped feet with applied, die-rolled trefoil bands; convex shoulders raised to a tapered and flared rims or necks with an applied, die-rolled trefoil bands; scrolled handles; engraved on the front center of each body, "M. A. Benedict;" maker's marks stamped on the bases.

Wrought silver loving cup in the Art Nouveau style; squat, lobed globular lower body tapering in at the top and bulging out at the bottm of the upper half; incurved upper body flaring to an applied, molded lip; lower body engraved and chased alover with flowers, leaves and foliate scrolls; three hollow cast loop handles with foliate grips and feathered foliate scroll joints are applied to the body; seated on a circular pedestal with a die rolled foliate flange, cast, applied foliate scroll decoration around the edge and three hollow cast paw feet applied to the base; engraved between two handles on the front, "PRESENTED TO/ THE MAYOR/ BY/ A COMMITTEE OF HIS FELLOW-CITIZENS/ IN THE ALDERMANIC CHAMBER/ OF THE CITY HALL/ ON AUGUST NINTH, 1911/ being the anniversary of the/ Mayor's providential preservation in the attack/ made upon his life/ as a tribute of respect, confidence and affection/ and to bear testimony to the hope that/ with health and strength his life may be prolonged/ for many years of continued usefulness/ in the public service" in block letters; engraved on the side, "HONORABLE/ WILLIAM J. Gallery Label:
William J. Gaynor (1849-1913) served as mayor of New York City from 1909-1913. In August 1910, a discharged city employee attempted to assassinate the mayor on the deck of an ocean liner as he was about to embark for Europe. The bullet entered near his throat and was never extracted. During his recovery, the normally cantankerous mayor was said to show extreme patience and fortitude. This cup was presented to him by a committee of aldermen on the first anniversary of the assassination attempt.
