This replica commemorating the completion of the High Bridge Tower was presented to John L. Brown (ca. 1805-1875), the project's supervisor, on August 7, 1871. Brown was a regular contractor for the City of New York and undertook a variety of municipal jobs, including supervision of paving, grading, and street cleaning, as well as construction. The High Bridge Water Tower, which was among the many important improvements to New York City's infrastructure undertaken after the Civil War, channeled water to northern Manhattan. Built as part of the Croton Aqueduct, the tower held and distributed water piped from the city's Croton River in Westchester County, to the city's growing population.
