This quilt was made as an engagement present for Frank Henry Platt (1852-1925) when he married Sarah Elizabeth Wiley (1855-1934) in 1877. Each of the twenty blocks was created by an individual maker from dress remnants, and the whole was assembled by Mr. Platt's sister, Miss Ella L. Platt (1844-1928). The square signed "Grace" was done by Mr. Platt's sister Grace Platt (1852-1925).

Double-layered white cotton "Marseilles quilt" or coverlet; geometric motif at center with scattered blossoms within feathered circular frame, surrounded by two serpentine borders, the innermost with a pineapple at each corner; outer rectilinear border with alternating leaves and blossoms; stylized plant motif surrounding edge.

Beginning in the latter half of the eighteenth century, weavers in Manchester, England, produced a double-layered woven cotton meant to resemble fine hand quilting. It was erroneously assumed that this type of cloth came from the French port of Marseilles, hence the term "Marseilles quilting." American merchants used Marseilles quilting for petticoats and men's summer waistcoats as well as ready-made coverlets. Marseilles quilts remained popular well into the nineteenth century.
