Description:
Blue wool and white cotton double cloth jacquard coverlet composed of two vertical sections hand-sewn together; alternating star-centered and diamond-centered floral medallions interspersed with eight-pointed stars and stylized eight-petaled flowers; picket fence and rose tree border on three sides; woven inscription along edge of lower border, and lion and inscription in each lower corner.

According to the accession records, this coverlet was spun and woven by Mary Salisbury, an ancestor of the donor. However, it is more likely that it was woven for her, possibly by Harry Tyler, a professional weaver active in Butterville, Jefferson County, NY.

Cotton quilt with multi-colored Sunburst pattern; diamond-shaped patchwork pieces radiate out from a central eight-pointed star to create an overall octagonal design within an inner square with appliquéd sawtooth border and appliquéd loop and stars at each corner; edge with border of appliquéd loops and stars, with a leaf appliquéd at each corner.

This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx.
