Description: 
Square cotton stitched "marking" or "alphabet" sampler stitched in brown and green cotton thread; horizontal rows of five alphabets (one stitched in eyelet stitch) numbers, diamond design of queen's stitch and signed with date "1821" and name and age, "Lucy Cole's Work Aged 12 Years"; horizontal rows separated by straightline rows of cross-stitching and bordered a simple sawtooth cross-stitch pattern; stitches include cross, eyelet, and queen's.

Helen Sargent Hitchcock, who had studied painting at the Art Students League, founded the Art Workers Club for Women in 1898 and the Art Alliance of America in 1914. Out of these grew the Art Center, which she founded in 1920. The Art Center joined seven afilliate organizations under a single building on East 56th Street in New York City, including the Art Alliance, the Society of Illustrators, the American Institute of Graphic Art, and the Art Directors Club.

Description: 
Burlap lambrequin trimmed with black velvet at the top edge and near the fringed bottom edge, the sides are hemmed; a row of diamond pattern runs across the center embroidered with wool in satin stitch interspersed with wool felt appliquéd flowers, the velvet strips are embroidered with herringbone and feather stitches in a geometric pattern.
