Gallery Label: 
This U.S. flag flew over Woodcliff, the home built by Augustus C. Richard 1855-1857, during the Civil War. It was rescued by the family as they fled across the Harlem river to avoid the draft riots. The home was later known as Libbey Castle and was torn down in 1931 to make way for Fort Tryon Park. Stars were added to the flag around 1890, to bring the number to the present fourty-four.

In 1889, four territories were raised to statehood in quick succession. North and South Dakota came in on November 2, Montana on the 8th, and Washington on the 11th. The new stars the states represented were to offically be added to the 38 star contellation on July 4, 1890, but the day before Idaho the was added, and then six days later Wyoming also joined the Union.
