Description:
Needlework picture in various colors of silk floss and blue metallic spangles on silk ground; the central image depicts an urn on top of a memorial, set upon a floating outdoor ground, framed on top with arching garland and below with two cornucopia ribboned together in the center and overflowing with fruit, flowers and once-bearded wheat; stitches include satin, straight, outline, outline and knots.

Gallery Label:
Eliza Kortright (1802-1882) entered the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies June 6, 1814. She was the daughter of John Kortright (d. 1810) and Catherine Seaman Kortright (1774-1861). Her father's sister was the wife of President James Monroe, and her mother later married Henry Brockholst Livingston, Judge of the U.S. Supreme Court. Eliza married Nicholas Cruger.

Roller-printed cotton textile fragment with a central portrait medallion of Andrew Jackson with an American bald eagle to his right, a frigate (U.S.S. This textile fragment depicts Captain Braxton Bragg (1817-1876) planting the flag at Buena Vista (1846) and Captain C.A. May receiving the sword of surrender from General La Vega at Reseca de la Palma. It may have been produced for the 1848 Presidential campaign of Zachary Taylor and is considered to be amongst the rarest textiles made to commemorate the Mexican-American War.

Description:
Pieced white cotton plain-weave quilt square centering a "Dutch tulip" or "Caesar's crown" variation motif in over-dyed green and yellow calico and golden-yellow and brown calico printed fabrics, circa 1865; hand-pieced and sewn in a hand running-stitch; inscribed in ink by hand on obverse "Miss Clara Bidwell" and "Clara Bidwell 1873" in pencil on the reverse.

This quilt square was probably made for a "friendship" quilt, also known as a "album" or "signature" quilt. They were popular in the mid-nineteenth century and usually given to an individual to commemorate a birth, marriage or move away from the local area. Squares were often given as keepsakes to ladies of a community or church congregation who were moving west. This square relates to the appliquéd copper and brown maltese cross star-printed calico quilt square (INV.11961b).
