Description: 
Vertical rectangular needlework picture on white satin with various colors of silk floss and chenille; the central image is oval and shows a woman in empire-style dress, with three small children outdoors near trees, the heads and arms of the figures are painted, this is frame with dark blue satin stitch with metallic spangles applied, above the picture is a swagging garland of roses and ribbons, and it is cradled below with blue wheat shafts, the wheat worked in gold thread; stitches include satin, straight, couching and outline.

This needlework picture was worked at the celebrated Misses Patten School in Hartford, Connecticut. Sarah (1761-1843), Ruth (1764-1850), and Mary Patten (1769-1850) were the granddaughters of Eleazer Wheelock (1711-1779), the founder of Dartmouth College. Sarah began teaching in 1785, which eventually led to the family enterprise. Boys with an older sister were accepted as students.
