Gallery Label:
A native of Portland, Maine, the subject eventually settled in New York where he pursued a literary career. In 1831 the editor of the New York "Mirror" sent him to tour Europe and write about his experiences. The letters, later collected in "Pencillings by the Way" (1844), made Willis a literary celebrity by the time he returned. This portrait was drawn while Willis was in England in 1834-36.

Gallery Label:
A subject, a noted chemist and nutritionist, was born in Nellore, India, the son of Baptist missionaries. He sought to develop a high grade of rubber for use under water, which led to his appointment in 1925 as chemical director of Bell Telephone Laboratories. Pursuing his interest in nutrition, in 1933, in collaboration with Robert Waterman, he succeeded in isolating and synthesizing vitamin B1 or thiamin.
