The subject, a native of Marion, Ohio, was ordained a Presbyterian minister; his real interest, however, was in social work and in socialist journalism. In 1918 he founded "The World Tomorrow" and during 1921-22 was associate editor of "The Nation." He was the Socialist candidate for president of the United States in every election from 1928 to 1948. His published books include "As I See It" (1932), "Human Exploitation" (1934), "A Socialist's Faith" (1951), and "The Test of Freedom" (1954).
