Painted shortly after Lewis's return to Washington from his expedition, this watercolor depicts him in frontiersman's dress, wearing a fur cap, a tunic to the mid-thighs, tight buckskin breeches, and moccasins.

A native of Lucas, Iowa, John L. Lewis began his career in the mines and soon became involved in union affairs. He became vice-president of the United Mine Workers of America in 1917; he was elected president three years later and served until 1959. He was an organizer of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organization, serving as president of the latter from 1935 to 1941.
