The theologian Reinhold Niebuhr received his B.D. degree from Yale Divinity School in 1914 and the following year was ordained a minister of the Evangelical Synod of North America. He joined the Union Theological Seminary in New York in 1928 and remained there until his retirement in 1960. Niebuhr is shown reading, seated at his desk in his study at Union Theological Seminary, in this sketch.

Newton was stationed on the "Hornet" during the War of 1812 and later commanded the steamers "Fulton" and "Missouri." From 1848 to 1852 he was in charge of the naval yard at Pensacola, Florida, and afterward served three years as commodore of the home squadron. In 1856-57 he was in command of the naval yard at Portsmouth, N.H. In this portrait, which may have been drawn posthumously from a photograph, he appears in his naval uniform with three stars on the shoulder boards.

Anne Marguerite Henriette Rouillé de Marigny, a daughter of an old aristocratic French family, married the fiery young royalist, Jean Guillaume Hyde de Neuville, in 1794. An amateur artist, the Baroness amused herself by making sketches of the scenes and people she encountered during the period she and her husband spent in exile in the United States (1807-14). Eighty-eight of these watercolors were purchased by the Society in 1953.

Jean Guillaume Hyde de Neuville became one of the central figures in the intrigues and affairs of France in the early years of the 19th century. When he came to the United States in 1806, his home in New Brunswick, New Jersey, became a gathering place for French exiles. He returned to France in 1815 and a year later was appointed minister and consul general to the United States. In 1821 Louis XVIII made him a baron and he returned to France.

After receiving a Ph.D. in physics from Yale in 1925, Lawrence joined the staff of the physics department there. In 1931, when only thirty years old, he invented the cyclotron, the device that permitted the study of the structure and behavior of the atom. In 1936 he was appointed director of the radiation laboratory at the University of California and in 1939 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics.
