This watercolor may have been intended for the Hudson River Portfolio, but it was not included in the published work. The bridge depicted was built by Obadia Wilcox in 1813. Two sketches of the bridge by Thomas Cole, one taken from approximately the same spot as the Wall watercolor, are in a Cole sketchbook of 1836 owned by the Detroit Art Institute. Cole labeled his drawing "Luzerne Bridge near the confluence of the Hudson and Sacandaga."

This is a view of the engagement between the British frigate Macedonian, 38 guns, Captain John S. Carden, and the United States frigate United States, 44 guns, Commodore Stephan Decatur. The ninety-minute battle took place in the Atlantic Ocean several hundred miles west of the Canary Islands on October 25, 1812. At the point depicted, the Macedonia had lost her mizzenmast, fore and main topmasts, and main yard and had suffered damage to her hull. Her colors were then lowered in surrender.

Glens Falls is the first large town on the upper Hudson which the river passes after emerging from the Adirondack foothills. The sixty-foot fall was called Chepontuo ("a difficult place to get around") by the Indians. It was named after Colonel John Glen of Schnectady, New York, who acquired land and built mills here in 1769.
