Description: 
This is a view from one of the upper floors of 67 West 52nd Street, the brownstone residence of George Stevens Schermerhorn, Jr., a brother of the artist. The Schermerhorn brownstone was located just east of Sixth Avenue. The brownstone at the left, on the south side of the street, is 66 West 52nd Street.

Description: 
The topography suggests that the scene is of boathouses situated on a point of land on the north bank of Sherman's Creek on upper Manhattan Island at its confluence with the Harlem River. Fort George Hill is in the left background, and in the far distance rises the spire of the Mount Washington Presbyterian Church on the Kingsbridge Road (now Broadway) at Dyckman Street.

Though the label indicates that this scene is of "Brown's Boathouse," it is probably a misnomer for Bronson, who lived in a stranded barge alongside the point. Bronson provided fishing parties with tackle, bait, and many a meal of clams and oysters taken from the nearby waters. For many years the place was know as Bronson's Point. The hill was graded in the 1890s, and subsequently the shore was bulkheaded and 201st Street was constructed.

This view depicts the encounter off the Brazilian coast between the United States frigate Constitution, 44 guns, Commodore William Bainbridge, and the British frigate Java, 38 guns, Captain Henry Lambert, on December 29, 1812. In an action of more than two hours, the Java was completely dismasted and was compelled to surrender. The Java, with falling masts and spars, is at the right of Thresher's view.

This depicts the capture of the Britsh brig Peacock, Captain William Peake, by the U.S. sloop-of-war Hornet, Captain James Lawrence, off Demerara River, north of Surinam on teh Guiana coast, on Febrary 24, 1813. The Peacock sank after the battle. Captain Lawrence (1781-1813), who supplied a drawing of the action to Thresher for the composition of this picutre, was killed on June 1, 1813, during the engagement of the U.S. frigate Chesapeake with the British frigate Shannon.

This depicts the 45-minute battle fought off the coast of Florida on April 29, 1814, in which the new sloop of war Peacock, 22 guns, commanded by Captain Lewis Warrington, captured L'Epervier, 18 guns, Captain Richard Wales, through superior gunfire. The hull of the American vessel was not hit during the action, and her casualties were confined to two wounded. The Peacock was named from the British brig of the same name captured by James Lawrence in February 1813.

Gallery Label: 
The screw steamer Kearsarge (length 201 feet, tonnage 1,031) was built in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and was commissioned in January 1862. In 1864 her captain, John Ancrum Winslow, U.S.N., received a challenge of combat from Captain Raphael Semmes, C.S.N. of the Confederate cruiser Alabama, then coaling at Cherbourg. The famous engagement between the two vessels was fought on June 19, 1864, within sight of the French coast. The Kearsarge sank the Alabama, which pluned stern first into the sea.
