In 1843, John James Audubon journeyed to Fort Union, Missouri, near the mouth of the Yellow River to gather specimens for his second great work, The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, accompanied by Isaac Sprague as his artist's assistant. This was Audubon's final expedition into the wilderness.
