The subject, a founding member of The New-York Historical Society, was the son of Quaker parents, Robert and Mary (Latham) Mitchill, and was born at North Hempstead, Long Island. He studied law as well as medicine, and in 1791 he was a member of the state legislature. He subsequently taught at Columbia College, and served in the U.S. House of Representives and in the U.S. Senate. He was vice-president of Rutgers Medical College from 1826 to 1830.
