The drawing depicts the arm and torch of the Statue of Liberty on display at the International Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876. Originally intended for completion in time for the nation's centennial on July 4, 1876, the statue was not unveiled until ten years later. To generate enthusiasm for the project and raise money for the construction of the massive concrete pedestal, the 30-foot raised arm and torch were displayed at the Centennial Exhibition, and later in New York City's Madison Square Park.
