This object was once part of the folk art collection of Elie Nadelman (1882-1946), the avant-garde sculptor. From 1924 to 1934, Nadelman's collection was displayed in his Museum of Folk Arts, located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The Historical Society purchased Nadelman's entire collection in 1937.

Gallery Label: 
Designed by Stanford White (1853-1906) and financed by private subscription initiated by a committee organized by William Rhinelander Stewart (1852-1929), this temporary Washington Memorial Arch was erected across lower Fifth Avenue just north of Washington Square on April 28, 1889, for the centennial celebration commemorating George Washington's inauguration as first president of the United States. The artist was then a draughtsman and this rendering was sketched by him under White's direction.
