This button was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee from a refuse pit outside the south ramparts of Fort Washington. Built by the Continental Army in the summer of 1776, the fort extended west along 183rd Street from Fort Washington Avenue to Pinehurst Avenue. The fort was captured on November 16, 1776 by British and Hessian forces, and was occupied by them until 1783. The button was worn on the uniform of a British private.

The button was worn by a private of the 63rd Regiment who was camped near the fort.

This button was excavated by Reginald P. Bolton, and others before the formation of the Field Exploration Committee in 1918, at 170th Street near Fort Washington Avenue, within the area of a British and Hessian camp between 168th and 171st Streets, west of Broadway. In the summer and fall of 1778, the Hessian Von Donop Regiment occupied the camp upon returning to New York after the British evacuation of Philadelphia. The British 38th Regiment occupied the camp by summer, 1781.

This cross-belt plate was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee at Fort George, a British fort at Niagara-on-the-Lake on the Niagara River in Ontario, Canada. Built in 1795, the fort was captured by American forces on May 27, 1813, and occupied by them until December. The plate was probably worn by a private of the Canadian Fencible Infantry Regiment at the point on his chest where his cross-belts intersected.

These buttons were excavated on May 24, 1914 by Reginald P. Bolton and others before the formation of the Field Exploration Committee in 1918, at the British camp on the Dyckman farm, between Seaman and Payson Avenues and 204th Street in Washington Heights. The buttons were worn by privates of the 52nd Regiment, which probably garrisoned the camp during the summer of fall of 1778. By 1779, the enlisted men had been absorbed by other regiments, and the officers had returned to Britain.
