This object was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee on October 1, 1935 on the shore of Lake Champlain at Fort Crown Point in New York. Built by the French and called Fort St. Frederic, the fort was destroyed in 1759 in anticipation of its capture by General Amherst. Rebuilt as Crown Point, the fort was captured on May 11, 1775 by the Green Mountain Boys, garrisoned with American troops, and recaptured in June, 1777 by General Burgoyne. The hook attached a bayonet scabbard to a belt.

Calver, and others prior to or after the formation of the Field Exploration Committee in 1918, at the British camp on the Dyckman farm, between Seaman and Payson Avenues and 204th and Academy Streets in Washington Heights. One was excavated in 1909 and four between 1914-16; these and the others were stored in the Jumel Mansion (Case 1, No. 323), at 160th Street and Edgecomb Avenue. The smaller flints were for pistols.

It would have been fitted on the mouth end of a leather sword scabbard, and probably belonged to a British or Hessian officer.
