This bar shot was found at Fort Independence, at 235th Street in the Bronx, New York City. Built by the Continental Army in the summer of 1776, Fort Independence was part of a chain of eight American forts that commanded the northern approaches to Manhattan island. Abandoned in November, 1776 in the face of a coming assault, the fort was occupied by British and Hessian troops until 1779. The bar shot, which expanded when fired, was probably abandoned by the retreating troops.

Gallery Label:
This musket flint was excavated by the Field Exploration Committee at Fort Ticonderoga, at Lake Champlain in New York. Built by the French in 1755 and called Carillon, the fort was destroyed in 1759 in anticipation of capture by General Amherst. Rebuilt as Ticonderoga, the fort was captured on May 10, 1775 by the Green Mountain Boys under the command of Ethan Allen and Colonel Benedict Arnold. The fort was recaptured in June, 1777 by General Burgoyne's army.
