Description:
Lead, brass, bronze, silver, or pewter military buttons; buttons have the emblem, number, or symbol of their regiment on front; seventeen buttons have a foliate emblem in center, above a regiment number or star enclosed in an oval border at bottom; eight buttons have an eagle perching atop a cannon; seven have only foliate or other inscriptions; two have a regiment number in center encircled by an inscription on the edge of the button; one button has an eagle grasping arrows with one claw, with a shield on its breast enclosing a foliate inscription; a silver button has an eagle in center with a shield on its breast: the eagle grasps an olive branch with one claw and an arrow with the other, above the eagle is an inscription inside a scroll, and the regiment name is at the top and bottom of the button; three other buttons have eagles, with a star or number enclosed in an oval border below the eagle at bottom.

They were worn on the coats and vests of United States infantry, artillery, and militiamen who served in the area during the War of 1812, or were stationed along the border after the war ended.

These buttons were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee at Fort George, a British fort at Niagara-on-the-Lake on the Niagara River in Ontario, Canada. Built in 1795, the fort was captured by American forces on May 27, 1813, and occupied until December. The buttons were worn on the uniforms of artillerymen who were stationed at the fort during its brief American occupation.
