This shell was excavated on May 20, 1922 by the Field Exploration Committee at Fort Washington. Built by the Continental Army in the summer of 1776, the fort extended west along 183rd Street from Fort Washington Avenue to Pinehurst Avenue. The fort was captured on November 16, 1776 by British and Hessian forces, and was occupied by them until 1783. The shell was probably fired at the fort during the assault.

These keys were excavated by Reginald P. Bolton and others at Colonial and Revolutionary War sites in Washington Heights, Manhattan. Three keys were found at the British camp on the Dyckman farm, two were found at a camp on 201st Street, and one was found inside Fort Washington. Keys were also found at the Blue Bell Tavern at 181st Street, and at the Black Horse Tavern near Dyckman Street. The keys were used to open fort gates, doors, and probably military supply chests.

Silver or gilt buttons or military buttons; military buttons have bone backs covered by thin faces with the number, emblem, or symbol of their regiment on the face; two of the buttons have an anchor; another button has its regiment number enclosed inside a star and three have their number enclosed inside an octagon border; two buttons have brass coating on a silver face: a regiment name on the edge of the face encloses a crown or flower in the center; many buttons have wreathed borders and crowns; five other buttons also have bone backs covered by thin faces, but have only floral or swirled line decorations without regiment numbers or symbols.

Most of these buttons were excavated by the Field Exploration Committee at British Revolutionary War sites in Washington Heights, including Fort George and the camps at Bennett Avenue, on the Dyckman farm, and at 201st Street. The button of the 20th Regiment was found at Somerville, Massachusetts, and the buttons of the King's American Regiment were found at Fort Erie in Canada. The buttons were worn on the uniforms of British and Loyalist officers.
