Description: 
A miniature shaving mug with a detailed color lithograph of a railroad track ascending steeply toward a mountain lodge with the caption "Otis Elev. R.R./ Catskill, N.Y." Otis Elevated Rail Road operated in the Catskill Mountains beginning in 1892. It was popular for travelers seeking to spend time at the Catskill Mountain House and other resorts. The train trip was also considered recreational or entertaining and attracted upper middle class day-trippers prior to the development of the inexpensive automobile. The image on this mug originated from a hand-colored 1892 postcard photograph of railroad workers on the Otis Elevated Rail Road, provided courtesy of the Ulster and Delaware Rail Road Historical Society, see additional images available by clicking on main image and choosing 'View All'.

Description: 
A cream colored ceramic coffee cup glazed with a delft blue pattern around three scenes commemorating the opening of a railroad. The first shows a large closed wagon being pulled by a horse labeled "Horse Drawn Car 1830". The reverse shows a steam engine train and is labeled "The 'Philip E. Thomas' 1838." In the middle is a scene with a memorial stone marked "First Stone/ of the/ Balt. & Ohio Railroad" with the caption "Laid July 4, 1828". The bottom has an image of the capital dome surrounded by the words "1827 1927 Baltimore and Ohio Railroad".
