Description: 
A molded figurine on a pedestal of a mustachioed man in black knickers standing next to a silvery gold pillar marked "T. Stevens", on a gray pedestal engraved with a bicycle in an oval frame embossed "Columbia/ Pope MFG. Co., Boston", highlighted in black. Pope introduced one of the first mass produced bicycles, the Pope Ordinary, which weighed seventy pounds and cost a huge 313 dollars in 1880, attracting few but the wealthy. Thomas Stevens rode an Ordinary from Oakland, California to Boston in 1884. In the 104 days it took him, he had to navigate unmappped territory, negotiate unimproved ninteenth century roads, and brave the attitudes of incredulous people he met on the way.
