Description:
A beige pinback button printed with two pikes, halberds or some other pole weapons and a green flag with a central gold Irish harp, encircled by the words "1798-1898/ Who Fears To Speak of '98". This is a reference to the 100th anniversary of the unsuccessful 1798 Irish Rebellion against British rule, inspired in part by the French and American Revolutions as well as British persecution of Irish nationalists. The line is the first of a poem or lyric: "Who fears to speak of Ninety Eight ? Who blushes at the name? When cowards mock the patriot's fate, Who hangs his head in shame? He's all a knave, or half a slave, Who slights his country thus; But true men like you men, Will fill your glass with us." Part of a series of pre-World War I flag buttons; many of the flags and region names are no longer current. This button is marked on the back "Irish Weekly Independent./ '98 Centenary Emblem".
