The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) pitted the far right Falange movement supported by Nazi Germany against the rebel Republican forces. When the Republican forces were defeated, Francisco Franco (1892-1975) established a repressive dictatorship in which all dissident voices were suppressed, often by imprisonment. During Spain's transition to a democratic state following the death of Franco, there was a movement to grant amnesty to the thousands still in prison for political reasons.
