A campaign to establish a federal holiday in honor of Martin Luther King (1929-1968) started shortly after his assassination. The effort was led by labor unions and bolstered by a petition signed by six million people. Signed into law in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, it was designated a "floating holiday" to be observed on a Monday close to the 15th of January, King's actual birthday.

In 1969, the novelist Normal Mailer (1923-2007) attempted to win the Democratic Party nomination for mayor of New York City. Along with the columnist Jimmy Breslin, running for City Council President, he advocated the secession of New York City and hte creation of a 51st state. Although Mailer came in fourth in a field of five, many considered his candidacy and position to be serious and thoughtful.
