Black beaver (textile) chapeau with rigid crown with black ostrich feathers covering top; black ribbon binding on edges of cock and fan; cockade in the form of a black silk rosette crossed diagonally by a band of thick, braided black cord secured at lower end by a gilded metal button with inscriptions, "EXCELSIOR / NYSA / NATIONAL GUARD," in relief; black patent leather sweatband and red satin lining.
