Description:
Shako with rigid, cylindrical, black felt-covered crown that is tapered and angled forward; flat black patent leather top and black patent leather visor which is thick and somewhat rectangular; circular gilded metal insignia with border of alternating spears and cannon, and number "7" in applied metal on black enameled disk on center; black patent leather chin strap secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with crossed cannon; white pompon.

This shako was apparently worn by the donor, Henry Pearl Talmadge, as a private in Co. G (Co. K, according to the accession records), 7th Regiment, National Guard New York (1870-1877). Various other parts of his uniform are also in the N-YHS Collection. Talmadge was involved with the banking house of Henry Talmadge and Co. beginning in 1886. He was also president of the South Carolina Railway, organizer and president of the Southern Pine Company of Georgia, and the director of the Phoenix National Bank and Vice President of The Empire Trust Company New York City.
