Mother of pearl scent bottle with metal frame in the form of a classical revival pitcher; two rounded pieces of mother of pearl are joined around the edges with a thin strip of metal; there is a long-lipped spout plugged with a crown shaped stopper attached to the frame with a chain; the handle is thin and formed into an elongated loop; the base of the bottle is in the form of a flower.

This smelling bottle belonged to John Ramage (d. 1794), an Irish miniaturist who emigrated to New York in 1777. The main purpose of smelling bottles, or pungents, was to mask unpleasant odors, and thus they usually held smelling salts. They were first stoppered by corks and eventually by screw caps. The capacity of these bottles ranges from fractions of a dram to a little over an ounce.
