Brass and black enameled metal microscope in rectangular maple case with hinged front door with lock and key and metal handle on top; with various accessories stored in small drawer in proper right top corner of case, and chart with printed instructions tacked to inside of door.

The Scovill Manufacturing Company produced brass objects such as buttons, screws, and tools in Waterbury, Connecticut, from 1802 to 1956. Payroll records from 1862 to 1916 indicate that about half of the workers were women. By 1920, the company had a well-developed employee relations structure, including a cafeteria that employed waitresses, a large number of recreational and betterment organizations, and an employee bulletin.
