Gallery Label: 
This compass needle belonged to Major-General Philip John Schuyler (1733-1804). As a young man he served in the British army, but by the 1760s he began to favor a break from the English crown. In 1775 he sat in the Continental Congress, and helped organize the Continental Army. He served as Major-General in northern New York, resigning in 1779 for service in public office in state affairs.
