This radio belonged to the donor's great aunt, Anna Purdes (1898-1983), who came to the U.S. from Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. After boarding for many years, Mrs. Purdes moved to her own apartment on the Lower East Side and found her radio a source of entertainment and an important aide for improving her English. Mrs. Gallagher remembers her great aunt listening to it every day, and recalled that the news Mrs. Purdes heard on the radio provided her and her friends with topics of conservation for their daily meetings in Tompkins Square Park.

Mrs. Gallagher specifically recalls learning about the sinking of the Andrea Doria in 1956 and the launch of Sputnik in 1957 from broadcasts heard over this radio. The radio is visible in a photograph of her family taken in July 1957, when they were celebrating her uncle's safe return from a trip to visit family in Czechoslovakia.
