In 1749 Martha Dandridge married Daniel Parke Custis; he died eight years later leaving her one of the largest fortunes and estates in Virginia. In 1759 she married George Washington and moved to Mount Vernon. Stuart's original portrait of Mrs. Washington was painted in Philadelphia in 1795; Stuart's unfinished portrait of George Washingtion and his portrait of Mrs. Washington were both in the collection of the Boston Athenaeum when Durand copied them in 1835.

The subject was the daughter of Samuel Smith and Rachel (Yaple) Smith. Her first husband was George H. Sands (1792-1849). On August 30, 1852, she was married to Chauncey Keator (1814-83), a merchant of Margaretville, New York. Her portrait was a gift to the Society from her grandson.
