In 1782 Peale started his gallery of portraits of eminent persons in Philadelphia which four years later became the Peale Museum. This portrait of the Dutch minister Pieter Johan van Berckel was one of the first to hang in the gallery, for it appears in the list of portraits as early as 1784. It remained in that distinguished collection until the sale of the Peale Museum effects in 1854 when it was purchased by Thomas J. Bryan.

This painting along with Durand's other "Head of a Roman" paintings were exhibited at the National Academy in 1842. This is one of eight studies of elderly Roman men painted by Durand in 1840-41, of which the society owns four.
