Gifford's sketches place him on the Sacandaga River, a tributary of the Hudson, in August 1849 when he made the pencil study that served as a reference for Scen in Northern New York. This small painting is one of the artist's very earliest works, demonstrating youthful promise as well as Gifford's profitable study of Thomas Cole's landscapes. Raised in the riverside town of Hudson, just across the river from Cole's house and studio, Gifford was keenly aware of his famous neighbor, whose example inspired him to embrace the outdoor life of a landscape painter.
