The subject practiced law in Albany, became prosperous, and took up residence at Schaghticoke, north of Troy, where his family had an estate. He held town offices in Troy and as a Federalist served in the U.S. Congress (1809-11), but during the Jacksonian era became a Democrat. He served as supervisor of the town of Troy, and in 1828 became a judge of Rensselaer County. His portrait was a gift to the Society from his son.
