he artist of this painting executed several portraits of the Schuyler family in the 1720s and for centuries was known simply as “the Schuyler painter.” Researchers now believe this artist was Nehemiah Partridge, one of a group of painters working along the Hudson River Valley in the early eighteenth century. The subject was the eldest son of Captain Johannes Schuyler and Elizabeth (Staats) Wendel Schuyler. He lived in Saratoga, Albany County, and was murdered there by a French and Indian raiding party in November 1745. His portrait, nearly identical to a painting of his younger brother, was a gift to the Society from his great-great-grandnephew.

"H. E. Covill. 86" painted in red in lower right corner.
Gallery Label:
The "H.E. Covill" who signed and dated this painting is probably Herbert Eugene Covill (1854-after 1930), a carriage trimmer working in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Covill depicted a dry goods establishment with the sign of "P. H. Miller," possibly a reference to Peter H. Miller, a New Bedford rope maker. The shop at left advertising oysters and fish confirms that the town depicted by Covill is a seaside location.
