Wilhelmine Joan Steeg was the daughter of Francis Steeg and Emma A. (Scheidweiler) Steeg of New York. She married J. Phillip Schmand (1871-1942) on December 27, 1911. In 1943 Mrs. Schmand, who was an associate member of N-YHS from that year until her death, gave the Society a number of portraits by her husband who had died the year before; among these were five of herself.

The subject was born in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and as a youth was apprenticed to a saddlemaker. At the age of eighteen he decided to become a painter and went to Philadelphia, studying briefly with Denis A. Volozan. By 1810 he had established his studio in New York, where it was to remain the rest of his life. Paradise was one of the founders of the National Academy of Design.
